Getting Ready for College Applications

Parents should start thinking now about key issues for students who soon will be applying to colleges. A free program from 6:30 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 in the Chantilly High School Media Center (library) will feature strategies for increasing a student’s appeal to colleges. Sponsored by the Chantilly High School PTSA, the program entitled “Parents: Get Ready of College Applications” will cover such questions as:

  • Should students apply for early action/decision?
  • Are SAT/ACT prep courses worthwhile?
  • How can financial aid be maximized?
  • What are key college courses for a changing job market?

Dr. Ralph Perrino, founder of Northern Virginia Tutoring Service, and Dr. Fred Siegmund, an economist and labor market forecaster, will host a roundtable discussion of these four key issues. The program will precede a 7 p.m. PTSA meeting, which is open to everyone. For additional information, contact Mary Crowson at marycrowson@hotmail.com.

Message from the President: FCPS Budget Decisions Looming

Key decisions will be made in the next two months that will affect the funding of Fairfax County Public Schools. I encourage parents, teachers and students to become familiar with current budget issues and contact local elected officials in order to let your voices be heard.

At the March 19 School Board meeting, Dr. Dale indicated that there was currently a difference of about $25 million between what the schools have requested and what the Board of Supervisors has planned to transfer. That gap will need to be made up either by the county transferring more money to the schools, the schools making more cuts, or a combination of both.

More than 75% of all income for the school system comes from Fairfax County, whose revenue is substantially driven by taxes on real estate. Two pending decisions by the Board of Supervisors that affect schools are the property tax rate, which will drive the total income available to the county, and the total amount transferred to the schools. Note that the Board of Supervisors determines the county funds available to the schools, and the School Board decides how those funds will be spent.

There is considerable information online about the budget from the county and the school system. Some key dates include:

  • Public hearings on the county budget (March 30-April 2)
  • Vote on the county budget by the Board of Supervisors (April 27)
  • Public hearings on the school budget (May 12-13)
  • Vote on the school budget by the School Board (May 21)

Chantilly High School families live within the Sully and Springfield Districts. Our supervisors are Michael Frey (sully@fairfaxcounty.gov) and Pat Herrity (springfield@fairfaxcounty.gov), and our school board members are Kathy Smith (Kathy.L.Smith@fcps.edu) and Liz Bradsher (elizabeth.bradsher@fcps.edu). I encourage members to contact these elected officials and let them know your views about funding and spending issues of concern to you.
